Description

The premier repunched mintmark variety for the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, RPM-001 has been documented by VarietyVista across an extraordinary seven die stages that chronicle the complete lifespan of this working die from fresh state through terminal deterioration. Cataloged as UVC-852 / DMR-002, this variety captures the progressive accumulation of die damage that accompanied the coin's high-volume production at the Denver Mint. Stage A finds both the obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), with the repunched D mintmark at its sharpest and both die faces free of significant wear markers. By Stage B (EMDS), a light die crack has appeared on the forehead and a die chip has formed on the right cornice, recording the earliest onset of die fatigue. Stage C (MDS) sees the obverse progress to mid-die state with a die break developing on the right cornice and another on the middle of column #12. Stage D (LMDS) marks a dramatic escalation: numerous east-west die scratches appear across the obverse, die scratches run north-south through the date, a die clash manifests through upper bays #8 and #9, and a strong die scratch cuts through ENT of CENT. Stage E (LDS) brings heavy die gouge damage south of the 9 in the date, die cracks on the lapel and from the head to the rim at the D of GOD, and a die crack on column #1. Stage F (VLDS) shows the obverse in very late die state with a die break on upper column #12, and the final Stage G (VLDS) records a longer die crack on the lapel and a large die break on column #12 extending further south. This seven-stage progression provides collectors with a comprehensive roadmap for determining the relative striking position of any given specimen.
