1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007

Description

Proof Roosevelt Dimes from 1961 were struck at Philadelphia on polished dies, and DDR-007 documents light spread appearing as notches on most outer rim lettering, with the strongest displacement on UNITED STATES. Die markers UVC-371 and DMR-012 anchor the attribution. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State remains unconfirmed, and Stage C at Late Die State is unconfirmed. The EDS documentation at Stage A means the earliest confirmed specimens came from a fresh die pair, before accumulated striking introduced deterioration. The notch-like doubling on rim lettering is distinctive — rather than uniform thickening, the secondary impression created step-like projections along letter edges, most visible on UNITED STATES where the larger letters amplify the effect. As a 90% silver proof struck three years before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage, the 1961 proof dime offers mirror-like surfaces that make even light doubling more detectable than on business strikes. The proof finish spotlights the variety, rendering the notched lettering visible under moderate magnification.
