1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Cataloged as DDR-005 for the 1961 Proof Roosevelt Dime, this doubled die reverse displays varying spread across multiple elements: light on ONE and UNITED STATES, medium extra thickness on OF AMERICA, the E of DIME, and the M of UNUM. The graduated intensity reflects how hub misalignment produces different displacement magnitudes at different locations depending on distance and direction from the axis of misalignment. As a proof struck at Philadelphia on specially prepared planchets with polished dies, the mirror-like fields make even subtle doubling more detectable than on business strikes. Die markers under UVC-369 and DMR-010 document three stages: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B is mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed), suggesting limited specimens have been studied for die state progression. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime, introduced in 1946, was still struck in 90% silver in 1961. Collectors should examine ONE, UNITED STATES, OF AMERICA, and the terminal letters of DIME and UNUM for the described spread.
