Description

The 1961 Proof DDR-001 is a doubled die reverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Proof Roosevelt Dime, cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-365 with die-marriage reference DMR-006. The reverse shows a medium spread on UNITED and ST of STATES, concentrating the most visible doubling in the upper reverse legend. Three die stages document its progression. Stage A, the early die state, is notable for a weak upper portion of the I in DIME — a subtle design weakness characterizing early impressions. The obverse paired with this reverse is also in early die state during Stage A. Stages B and C both remain unconfirmed, indicating most surviving examples likely come from early in the die's working life. The DDR-001 designation as the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1961 Proof Roosevelt Dime suggests this variety was among the earliest discovered for this date. As a Proof-only variety struck at Philadelphia, it was produced under controlled conditions where lower striking volumes per die pair mean fewer total coins were produced from this doubled die compared to a business-strike variety.
