1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

Seventh Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1961 Proof Washington Quarter, WDDO-007 exhibits clockwise rotational spread pivoting from approximately 12 o'clock on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the lower ribbon beneath Washington's portrait. CW spread from a 12 o'clock pivot means the secondary hub impression rotated slightly clockwise, producing displacement that increases with distance from the pivot — elements near the top show minimal movement while the date and lower ribbon display the strongest separation. A die scratch running southwest from the lower left of L in LIBERTY provides a secondary diagnostic independent of the rotational doubling. This pattern is characteristic of angular hub displacement rather than linear shift. As a proof struck on 90% silver planchets at Philadelphia, the mirror fields showcase the spread with particular clarity. Flanagan's Washington portrait was in its thirtieth year, struck at 24.3mm. Examine IGWT for clockwise spread from the 12 o'clock pivot, check date and lower ribbon for stronger displacement, and locate the die scratch SW from L in LIBERTY.
