1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
ErrorDescription
Found exclusively on proof strikes, the 1961 Washington Quarter WDDO-003 shows an extremely close spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety is paired with a reverse die that is itself a very minor doubled die cataloged as WDDR-001 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files, making this a notable die marriage where both obverse and reverse carry doubling. The reverse WDDR-001 exhibits a very close centrist spread on the branch ends and some letters of QUARTER DOLLAR. On the obverse die, no significant die markers have been noted. This die marriage offers collectors a two-for-one opportunity, as a single coin can display both obverse and reverse doubled die characteristics. The centrist doubling on this proof issue requires careful examination under magnification, as the extremely tight spread means the secondary image remains very close to the primary design elements throughout IGWT and the date numerals.
