1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as 1961 25-cent Proof WDDO-004, this proof Washington Quarter displays a spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST and the L in LIBERTY — selective involvement affecting the motto fully while only a single letter from the primary inscription registers the displacement. The L sits at the leading edge of the LIBERTY arc on John Flanagan's obverse, nearest to IN GOD WE TRUST, explaining why it registered the inward spread while remaining letters received progressively less offset below the detection threshold. The doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and the isolated L is clearly resolved under magnification despite the limited scope. No significant die markers were noted on either side, and no cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 1961 Proof Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 6.25 grams as part of the annual proof set program. Mirror-like proof fields enhance visibility of the spread on both areas. Examination under 7x magnification should target IN GOD WE TRUST and the L of LIBERTY to confirm the inward displacement characteristic of this variety.
