Description

Exceptionally strong spread characterizes WDDR-007 on the 1961 proof Roosevelt Silver Dime — the Wexler Team cataloging this variety under the reference 1961 10-cent Proof WDDR-007 with doubling described as showing towards the center on all letters and dots around the rim, E PLURIBUS UNUM, both lower stems, the flame, the upper torch holder, the lower torch holder base, and both the left and right leaves. The sheer number of affected design elements marks this as one of the more dramatic doubled die reverses in the Roosevelt Dime proof series, where the hub displacement was large enough and the axis positioned such that virtually every design element on John R. Sinnock's reverse received a detectable secondary impression. Adding further complexity, tripling appears on the TES of STATES — three distinct hub impressions visible on these letters, indicating the die underwent at least three hubbing passes with progressive misalignment, each adding another layer of offset to the inscription. Obverse die markers include a die gouge manifesting as a dot at the lower ear opening on Roosevelt's portrait, while the reverse carries an N/S (north-south) die scratch on the top leaf on the left side. As a proof striking from the San Francisco Mint (all proof Roosevelt Dimes of this era were produced in Philadelphia, which held exclusive proof production responsibilities until the early 1960s), this coin was struck in 90% silver at 2.5 grams with the enhanced clarity that proof surfaces bring to variety diagnostics. The combination of strong-class doubling with tripling on select letters makes WDDR-007 a standout variety for Roosevelt Dime specialists, offering visible doubling at relatively low magnification levels.
