1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Struck on 90% silver planchets during the final years before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver circulating coinage, the 1961 Proof WDDR-005 presents very close spread towards the rim on UNITED STATES and E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM — a pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted slightly outward, pushing letter contours toward the rim. Attributed by the Wexler Team, an additional diagnostic appears as a die gouge in the form of a raised dot above the B in PLURIBUS, providing a secondary marker independent of the hub doubling. The outward radial spread is consistent with hub displacement that slightly enlarged the effective die diameter at the affected elements. As a proof issue, this dime was struck at Philadelphia on specially polished planchets with polished dies, the mirror fields making even close spreads more apparent than on business strikes. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design was in its sixteenth year, struck at 17.9mm. Inspect UNITED STATES and E PLU for the rimward spread, then locate the raised dot above B in PLURIBUS for die identification.
