1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Directing its spread toward the rim rather than the center, this Wexler-attributed 1961 Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDR-004 shows a very close spread on UNITED and E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, with additional displacement visible on the bottom of the olive branch. The outward direction indicates the hub displacement pushed design elements peripherally, consistent with classes of hub doubling where the secondary impression sits slightly outside the primary. The very close intensity means separation between impressions is minimal, requiring careful magnification to distinguish doubled contours from normal die characteristics. No significant obverse or reverse die markers have been documented. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This 1961 proof was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams — three years before the 1965 transition to copper-nickel clad composition. Examine UNITED and the E PLU letters under 10x magnification for subtle outward displacement, and check the olive branch contours for confirming spread.
