1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
ErrorDescription
Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1961 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-018 was formerly listed as WDDR-099. It replaces the original WDDR-018 listing, which was delisted because the doubling was too minor. Discovered by John Conway, this variety exhibits a combined Class II and Class V (distorted and pivoted hub) doubling mechanism—a relatively uncommon dual-class designation. The nice doubling shows on UNITED STATES OF, FIVE CENTS, and the MONTIC of MONTICELLO, spanning both the denomination and the building name. Obverse die markers include a slanted die scratch to the right of Jefferson's nose. The reverse carries a die dot inside the upper portion of the second U of PLURIBUS. The dual-class doubling mechanism distinguishes this variety from the more typical single-class varieties in the Jefferson Nickel proof series, and the spread across three separate inscription areas gives collectors multiple confirmation points for attribution.
