1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013

Description

Attributed by John Conway and cross-referenced as 15-R-II-C (Wexler Variety ID: 1961 WDDR-013 Proof), this 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel reverse doubled die has an important nomenclature history: the variety was formerly listed as WDDR-105 and renumbered to replace the original WDDR-013, which was delisted when it was found to be a doubled working hub rather than a doubled die. Classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, strong spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, a very nice spread shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and a closer spread appears on FIVE CENTS and MON of MONTICELLO. Reverse die markers are precise: a die dot inside the second A of AMERICA, a die gouge below AME of AMERICA, and a curving die scratch on the upper right corner of the small right window of Monticello. No obverse die markers were noted. Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1961 were struck at Philadelphia with mirror-finish dies; Class II Distorted Hub Doubling produces a characteristic wavy appearance on affected lettering that distinguishes it from the cleaner splits of Class I rotational doubling.
