1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Honored among the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties and attributed by Lou Coles, the 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-010 is cross-referenced as CONECA 10-R-II (Wexler Variety ID: 1961 WDDR-010 Proof). It exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling. A strong spread toward the rim shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, decreasing from left to right. Close tripling — three distinct impressions — is visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE, and MON of MONTICELLO, also decreasing from left to right, along with the left windows of the building. Two obverse die markers confirm attribution: strong die gouges to the left of the upper left tip of the W in WE. Three reverse markers are documented: two diagonal die scratches on the lower right side of the building, and three diagonal die scratches on the left side. Class II doubling is produced when hub and die are misaligned in the hubbing press, generating a pivot-type distortion. The combination of strong spread on the motto with tripling on the lettering and building windows makes WDDR-010 one of the most visually dramatic proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses in the Wexler catalog.
