1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-023
Error
Description
Cataloged under VarietyVista identifiers UVC-1061 and DMR-025, this twenty-third doubled die reverse for the 1961 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel displays light spread across E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS on the Monticello reverse. The doubling affects multiple inscription areas simultaneously, consistent with a single misaligned hubbing impression that displaced all reverse lettering by a detectable amount. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state, Stage B at mid-die state showing characteristics on both reverse and obverse, and Stage C in late die state. The progression from early through late die state tracks how the doubled image may sharpen or soften as the die wears through its service life. Twenty-three DDR varieties for the 1961 date reflects the scale of Jefferson Nickel die variety research — Philadelphia's substantial nickel production in the early 1960s consumed many die pairs, each carrying the possibility of a hubbing misalignment. Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its dense inscriptions surrounding the architectural facade, provides reference points where even light doubling becomes detectable.
