1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-020

Description

Cataloged as DDR-020 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-1058 and die marriage record DMR-022, this 1961 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel displays a light spread on the reverse lettering. The doubling appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES, and FIVE, with the spread decreasing in strength from left to right across the inscription. Three die stages document the progression. In Stage A at early-to-mid die state, swirling die scratches appear on both the reverse and obverse, a die scratch runs southwest from the left dome of Monticello, and another passes through the upper D of GOD by mid-die state. Stage B finds both obverse and reverse at mid-die state with the earlier scratch patterns softened. By Stage C, both sides have reached late die state. The left-to-right diminishing spread pattern is characteristic of hub doubling where the secondary impression was slightly rotated, producing stronger displacement on the leftmost letters and progressively weaker separation toward the right. Jefferson nickels from the early 1960s are plentiful in circulated grades, but documented doubled die reverses add variety-collecting depth.
