1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-022

Description

Class II distorted hub doubling produces a spread toward the center on STATES OF AMERICA, CENTS, TICELLO of MONTICELLO, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the right side of the building on this 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel. All spreads increase from left to right across the reverse, a diagnostic pattern consistent with the distorted hub mechanism where the angular relationship between hub and die varies across the die face. Reverse die markers include a die gouge (dot) on the upper right corner of the building just under the roof, a short vertical die gouge at the rim under the first T of STATES, and a die gouge just left of the lower portion of the O in OF. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The left-to-right spread increase provides an attribution shortcut, as the strengthening doubling pattern is visible when scanning across the legend. Philadelphia struck proof Jefferson Nickels in modest quantities during 1961, and the controlled striking environment of proof production yields coins where doubling characteristics are preserved with exceptional clarity on the mirror-finish surfaces.
