Description

Formerly listed as WDDR-115, this Proof Jefferson Nickel variety was renumbered and replaces the original WDDR-011 listing, which was delisted because it was a doubled working hub. The revised variety exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling, with a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and a closer spread on UNITED STATES, the M of MONTICELLO, and the left side of the building. Die markers on the obverse include none noted. The reverse shows a slanted die scratch inside the left arch and a die dot above the left arch. The renumbering from WDDR-115 to WDDR-011 reflects catalog maintenance where the original entry was vacated and a previously higher-numbered variety was moved into the open slot. Class II distorted hub doubling produces spread that varies across the die surface, which explains why the spread on UNITED STATES and MONTICELLO is closer than on E PLURIBUS UNUM. This 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at Philadelphia, and the proof striking process produces sharper impressions that can make subtle doubling easier to detect than on business strikes.

Die Markers
