1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Formerly listed as WDDR-117, this proof 1961 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse was renumbered to WDDR-003 after the original WDDR-003 was delisted because it was determined to be a doubled working hub rather than a doubled working die. This catalog history is significant — the delisted original affected multiple listings that were subsequently renumbered, and the new WDDR-003 designation now points to an entirely different die. The variety exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a nice spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM that increases from left to right, and on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with spread decreasing from left to right. Closer doubling appears on FIVE and on MON of MONTICELLO. A die scratch on the rim above the date serves as the obverse die marker, and a die dot to the left of the I in MONTICELLO marks the reverse. The opposing directional spread patterns — increasing left to right on the motto while decreasing on the legend — are characteristic of Class II doubling where the hub distortion creates asymmetric displacement. Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel.
Die Markers
