1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-027
Error
Description
Identified by VarietyVista as UVC-803 with die marriage record DMR-040, RPM-027 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark displaced to the east on the lower serif. Four die stages document this variety, with a distinctive forehead die crack that evolved across multiple stages serving as the primary obverse diagnostic. Stage A records Early Die State (EDS), where a very light die crack on the forehead and a die scratch from the left upper base to the N of UNITED are both present — unusual in that the forehead crack appeared at the die's earliest documented stage rather than developing later as is more typical. By Stage B (MDS), the forehead crack has intensified to a light die crack, and a light die scratch has appeared from the F of OF to the top of the building. Stage C advances to Late Die State (LDS), bringing a die chip on column 12 and a die chip at the lower right leg of the N of CENT. Stage D, also at LDS, introduces die depressions — one under the middle bar of the E of CENT and another under the right side of the T of CENT. The progressive forehead crack — from very light at EDS through light at MDS — provides a reliable staging marker that collectors can use to sequence their specimens within this variety's die state continuum. The concentration of late-stage damage around the CENT inscription and column 12 reflects the typical stress distribution on Lincoln Memorial reverse dies.
