Description

Extensively documented by VarietyVista as UVC-785 with die marriage record DMR-022, RPM-015 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark with displacement to the north showing on the serifs. Six die stages record one of the most detailed deterioration sequences among the 1961-D RPM varieties. Stage A carries an unconfirmed Early Die State (EDS) classification. Stage B advances to Mid Die State (MDS), where the secondary mintmark appears light inside the main mintmark, a light die crack has formed over the V.D.B. designer's initials, and the reverse is also at MDS. Stage C, also at MDS, reveals that the secondary mintmark has strengthened to a strong impression inside the main mintmark — an unusual phenomenon where mid-die-state wear actually improved the visibility of the repunching. Strong northeast die scratches cross the obverse at this stage, with the reverse at MDS. By Stage D (LMDS), a die break has formed under the left base, die cracks connect the upper CEN of CENT, and die cracks connect the lower ES of STATES. Stage E marks a dramatic escalation of deterioration: a die crack on the forehead and a die break on the neck appear on the obverse, while the reverse shows die breaks in the lower E and upper R of AMERICA, a die break under the right side of the T of CENT, a die break on the right cornice, a die break on upper column 12, and a large depression at the right eave — at LMDS. The terminal Stage F (LDS) records a die break outside the middle of column 12. The six stages document a die that accumulated an extraordinary concentration of reverse failures.
