Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-775 with die marriage record DMR-012, RPM-007 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark variety with displacement to the north on both secondary punches. Four die stages have been recorded for this variety, providing a thorough account of the die's deterioration from early service through terminal decline. Stage A carries an unconfirmed Early Die State (EDS) designation, representing the die's initial production phase. Stage B is classified as Mid Die State (MDS), also unconfirmed, marking the intermediate period of die service. The die's condition becomes more definitively documented beginning with Stage C, where Late Die State (LDS) is confirmed by the appearance of a light die crack running across Lincoln's shoulder, accompanied by a reverse that has also reached LDS. This shoulder crack serves as a reliable diagnostic for attributing later-state specimens. Stage D records the die's terminal phase at Very Late Die State (VLDS), identified by light die scratches running southwest through the date area, with the reverse similarly deteriorated to VLDS condition. The progression from a shoulder die crack at Stage C to southwest die scratches through the date at Stage D illustrates how rapidly a die could accumulate additional damage once structural fatigue set in, with the final specimens struck from this die showing considerably more surface disruption than those from its earlier stages.
