Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identification codes UVC-352 and DMR-021, DDR-002 is a doubled die reverse variety of the 1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime struck at Philadelphia. The doubling appears as a light spread on ONE DIME, the decorative dots flanking the reverse inscriptions, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and AMERICA — a broad but subtle distribution consistent with a slight rotational or pivoting misalignment between hub impressions during die manufacture. A notable collecting footnote for this variety is its presence in proof sets containing the small date obverse: DDR-002 can be found in small date sets from 1960, giving collectors a specific proof set target when searching for this variety within original holders. Die state progression documents three stages: Stage A is early die state, confirmed by a die gouge dot on the E of UNITED on the obverse; Stage B has both reverse and obverse confirmed as mid die state; and Stage C has both reverse and obverse in late die state. The Stage A die gouge dot on the E of UNITED is the earliest confirmed die marker for this variety and provides a useful secondary attribution confirmation for EDS specimens. Proof Roosevelt Dimes are well preserved as a class due to their collector-set origins, making DDR-002 examples correspondingly available in high-grade certified holders, which in turn makes the light doubling visible under proper examination conditions.
