1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

DDR-001, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1960 proof Roosevelt dime with a strong spread across all the lettering around the rim, strongest on UNITED. Both catalogs cite it as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes FS-10-1960-801 (015.5)). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong CW spread on every letter and dot around the rim, on E PLURIBUS UNUM and on the right stem, strongest at UNITED. Its obverse is itself a doubled die, Wexler's WDDO-004 for the 1960 proof dime, with light doubling on the eyelid, the designer's initials, and the hair above the ear and at the back of the head. Obverse markers are a chip in the hollow above the eyelid where the forehead starts and a chip (dot) just right of the upright and above the base of the L of LIBERTY. On the reverse, chips mark the leaves touching the left side of the torch holder, and another chip sits on the left side of the A of STATES, between its middle and top. Frank Baumann submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-R-I. VarietyVista credits J. T. Stanton with the report. Under its marker codes UVC-351 and DMR-020, both sides are in an early die state at stage A; stage B (a middle die state) and stage C (a late die state) are unconfirmed.
