1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1960 25¢ Pr WDDR-005, this proof Washington Silver Quarter presents a notable combination variety: the obverse is also a minor doubled die listed as 1960 25¢ Pr WDDO-005, exhibiting a very close Class II spread toward the center on IGWT (IN GOD WE TRUST), LIBERTY, and the 19 in the date — making this a dual DDO/DDR die pair where both the obverse and reverse dies each received misaligned secondary hub impressions during their separate manufacturing processes. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running southwest-to-northeast between the 9 and 6 in the date. The reverse carries a vertical die scratch on the upper neck of the eagle. No additional cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known for either the obverse or reverse doubled die components. The Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) spread toward the center on the obverse produces doubling where the secondary image is displaced inward, creating extra thickness on the interior edges of the affected inscriptions — a pattern that requires careful examination to distinguish from die deterioration effects. As a proof issue, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, yielding brilliant mirror-like fields that enhance the visibility of even subtle doubling features. The 1960 Washington Quarter proof was composed of 90% silver at 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. John Flanagan's design depicts George Washington on the obverse and the heraldic eagle on the reverse.
