Bearing the -001 suffix that identifies it as the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1960 Proof Washington Quarter, this variety displays an extremely close spread directed toward the center on the letters of LIBERTY. The tight doubling demands careful magnification to confirm, as the secondary impression sits very near the primary design elements. Diagnostic die markers aid identification: the obverse shows a die gouge to the left of the 9 in the date and a die gouge near the rim below the queue of Washington's hair.
