1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022
ErrorDescription
Attributed by John A. Wexler, WDDO-022 on the 1960 Jefferson nickel exhibits very close Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date, with the strongest expression appearing on the R of LIBERTY. Class II doubling results from a distorted or tilted hub creating uneven pressure during die sinking, producing subtle secondary images that vary in strength across the design surface. The "very close" classification means the primary and secondary images nearly overlap, requiring careful examination under magnification to distinguish the doubling from normal strike characteristics. Obverse die markers include die scratches below the LI of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die scratch appears above the left arch of Monticello, and additional die scratches sit to the left of the F of FIVE. These reverse markers are particularly useful for confirming the die identity on circulated specimens where the close doubling may be partially obscured by wear. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 1960 WDDO-022, this variety is one of over twenty documented doubled die obverses for the 1960 Philadelphia nickel.
