1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Documenting hub doubling on the reverse of the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-001 shows a very close spread towards the center on the designer's initials FG. The Wexler designation is 1960-D 1¢ WDDR-001. Because the doubling is confined to the designer's initials and described as "very close," this is a subtle variety that requires careful examination under high magnification to confirm. The obverse die paired with this reverse is identified as Large Date and carries a die scratch running south from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY, along with numerous N/S die scratches throughout the obverse surface. No significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been noted. Doubled die reverse varieties are produced through the same mechanism as their obverse counterparts: a working die receives a secondary hub impression with slight positional offset, embedding a permanent doubled image into the die face. The concentration of doubling on the FG initials — which sit at the lower right of the Memorial design near the base — is consistent with a hub offset that affected the periphery more than the center. Collectors should examine the FG initials under at least 10x magnification and compare against reference images to distinguish the genuine spread from die deterioration effects.
