Description

Documented by VarietyVista as VDDR-010 with provisional catalog codes (UVC and DMR numbers unassigned, indicated as "????"), this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel displays light to medium spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling intensity increasing from left to right. The provisional UVC/DMR assignment — indicated by question marks in the catalog — suggests this variety was documented before its full catalog integration was completed, a status sometimes encountered with varieties awaiting final confirmation or cross-referencing. The left-to-right increasing spread pattern is consistent with a hub displacement geometry where the pivot or offset axis lies to the left of center, producing minimal displacement on leftward elements and progressively greater separation moving rightward across the die face. Three documented die stages chart the working die's life: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS) identified by numerous die scratches running east-west across the reverse with the obverse also at MDS, and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The numerous east-west die scratches at Stage B may result from die polishing or contact with abrasive material during die handling, and their directional consistency suggests they were produced in a single maintenance event rather than from random accumulation. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel with the Monticello reverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 1960 in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The 1960-D had a substantial mintage of approximately 192 million pieces, and the light to medium spread classification places this variety in the moderate range of doubled die visibility — identifiable under 7x-10x magnification but not immediately obvious to the unaided eye.
