Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel carries the WDDR-021 doubled die reverse classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling. Close Class II doubling shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread increasing from left to right across the inscription. This progressive left-to-right intensification is a hallmark of Class II distortion, where the hub deformation creates varying displacement at different points across the die face. Reverse die markers include a die scratch below the O of OF, a die scratch between the T and E of UNITED, and a slanted die scratch above the second T of STATES. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1960-D WDDR-021. The high sequential number of WDDR-021 indicates that the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel has been extensively studied by variety researchers, with at least twenty other doubled die reverse varieties cataloged before this one. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse lettering serves as the primary diagnostic area where this variety's Class II hub distortion is most readily detectable.
