Representing the rarest doubling classification, this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel WDDR-017 is a Class VI (Distended Hub Doubling) variety attributed by Brian A. Ribar — the rarest of the six standard doubling classes. Class VI occurs when the hub expands or distends during the hubbing process, creating outward spread from the center of the design. Close doubling is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse carries distinctive die markers: a die scratch through the C of CENTS, many die dots in and above the right arch of Monticello, and two die gouges on the left side of the second L of MONTICELLO. No obverse die markers were noted. Class VI varieties are the least commonly encountered doubling type, making WDDR-017 significant for variety specialists who study hub doubling mechanics.
