Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and carrying the Wexler cross-reference 1960-D WDDR-016, this Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits Class VI distended hub doubling — a relatively uncommon doubling class where the hub expands or distends between impressions, creating a spread that manifests as a slight enlargement of design elements. The close doubling is visible on the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, requiring careful magnified examination to distinguish from die deterioration doubling or machine doubling. Reverse die markers provide critical attribution diagnostics: a long die scratch extends from the S of PLURIBUS all the way to the right porch of Monticello, and a slanted die scratch appears above the letters AM of AMERICA. No obverse die markers have been noted. The 1960-D was a high-mintage Denver Mint business strike, produced in quantities that consumed numerous die pairs and created ample opportunity for hub doubling events. Class VI doubling differs mechanistically from the more common Classes I through V: rather than involving rotation, distortion, pivot, offset, or tilt between hub and die, Class VI results from an actual dimensional change in the hub — an expansion or contraction that causes all design elements to shift outward or inward uniformly. This mechanism produces doubling that can be subtle and easily confused with other forms of die deterioration, making the die marker diagnostics particularly important for reliable attribution. Ribar's documentation of this variety contributes to the comprehensive Wexler catalog of Jefferson Nickel doubled dies, building the research base that enables collectors to confidently identify Class VI doubling in the field.
