1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015

Description

Classified as Class VI distended hub doubling, this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits strong displacement on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Class VI doubling results from a distorted or warped hub creating uneven displacement across the die face, producing doubling that varies in direction and magnitude at different locations. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler 1960-D WDDR-015, the strong classification indicates clearly visible secondary impressions on the affected inscriptions. Reverse die markers include slanted die scratches inside the left arch of Monticello, slanted scratches below E and P of E PLURIBUS, and a slanted scratch through NT of CENTS. The consistent slant direction suggests these scratches were introduced during die finishing. Felix Schlag`s Monticello reverse, used from the series` 1938 debut through 2003, features architectural detail and surrounding inscriptions providing productive zones for identifying hub doubling. Denver`s 1960 nickel production was substantial, and the strong doubling on both the motto and denomination inscription gives collectors two broad diagnostic areas for confirming this variety.
