1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Documented by Mike Bruggerman and attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel WDDR-012 is a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety — a class in which a distorted hub impression spreads lettering toward the center of the coin. The doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM increases in prominence from left to right, and a lesser spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA similarly intensifies leftward to rightward — graduated patterns characteristic of Class II distortion mechanics. Obverse die markers include two strong scratches between the rim and the base of the bust. Reverse die markers include a slanted scratch through the C of AMERICA extending to the base of Monticello, short scratches through the upper portion of URIBUS in E PLURIBUS UNUM, a scratch at the lower left of the U in UNITED, and die dots above the right arch of Monticello. The die dots above the right arch and the scratch through C of AMERICA provide precise reverse reference points against the building's architectural background. Die Markers: Obverse: Two strong die scratches between the rim and the base of the bust. Reverse: Slanted die scratch through C of AMERICA to base of building; series of short die scratches through upper portions of URIBUS of E PLURIBUS UNUM; short die scratch to lower left of U of UNITED; series of die dots above right arch.
