Description

Class II, Distorted Hub DoublingA nice spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the right side of the building. Die Markers: Obverse: Die gouge across top of Y of LIBERTY; die gouge between tops of R and U of TRUST. Reverse: Die gouge (dot) above U of UNITED near base of building; die scratch in field near rim to upper left of building.. Attributed by John Conway, this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse is cataloged as Wexler 1960-D WDDR-011 and features a nice spread toward center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the right side of the Monticello building. On the obverse, a die gouge crosses the top of the Y in LIBERTY, and a die gouge appears between the tops of the R and U in TRUST. On the reverse, a die gouge appearing as a dot sits above the U in UNITED near the base of the building, and a die scratch runs in the field near the rim upper left of the building. The spread toward center indicates that the hub was positioned slightly farther from the die during one impression than during another, causing design elements at the periphery to shift inward. The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel was produced at the Denver Mint during the post-war era when nickel production was routine and substantial. John Conway's attribution work has contributed to documenting Jefferson Nickel varieties across many dates. The multiple die gouges on both obverse and reverse provide strong secondary markers for confirming this specific die pair.
