Description

Nice Class VI distended hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right, distinguishes this tenth doubled die reverse for the 1960 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel. Class VI doubling is among the less common mechanisms — it results from a die that was distended or expanded, producing a spread that grows progressively stronger across the affected area rather than maintaining uniform displacement. Attributed by John A. Wexler under Wexler Variety ID 1960-D WDDR-010, die markers on the reverse include die scratches through the second O of MONTICELLO and die scratches to the right of the S of CENTS, while the obverse shows no noted markers. The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of the post-war era, before the coin shortage of the mid-1960s disrupted production patterns and led to the removal of mintmarks in 1965. Denver's substantial nickel production in 1960 consumed many die pairs, and the documentation of ten doubled die reverses for this single date demonstrates the depth of research on early 1960s Jefferson varieties. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, depicting the columned facade and dome of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation, provided architectural detail that made the increasing left-to-right spread particularly visible on the inscription lettering.
