Description

Distinguished by its Class VI (Distended Hub Doubling) mechanism, WDDR-008 on the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel represents a less common doubling class where the hub expanded or distended slightly between impressions, producing a characteristic thickening or enlargement of design elements rather than the lateral displacement seen in Class I or the distortion of Class II. Nice Class VI doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right, suggesting the distension had a directional component that amplified its effects at one side of the die. Die markers include a die gouge on the upper left side of the first A of AMERICA on the reverse and slanted die scratches above the left porch, with no obverse markers noted. Attributed by John A.
