1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
Error
Description
Attributed by John A. Wexler and cataloged as 1960-D WDDR-007, this Jefferson nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a spread toward the center visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and very slightly on FIVE CENTS. All spreads increase slightly from left to right across the reverse, following the rotational geometry typical of Class II hub displacement. Obverse die markers include a short strong horizontal die scratch between the upper back of the collar and the queue, plus a short vertical die gouge between the upper portions of E and R of LIBERTY. The reverse carries a series of die gouges extending from the right side of M of MONTICELLO, another cluster of gouges between the last L and O of MONTICELLO, a slanted die scratch between the right base of the building and the D mintmark, and a die gouge dot above the roof at the right side of the building. The left-to-right increase in spread intensity is characteristic of a slight rotational misalignment between hub and die during the impression process.
