1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Discovered by John A. Wexler himself and bearing the attribution Wexler Variety ID: 1960-D WDDR-003, this Denver Jefferson Nickel reverse exhibits Class VI distended hub doubling — a variety type where the hub physically expands during the impression process. Very nice doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right across the reverse lettering. The left-to-right gradient is characteristic of distended hub varieties, where expansion radiates outward from the hub's center, producing progressively wider displacement toward the periphery. That Wexler — the namesake of the entire cataloging system — personally discovered this variety lends it particular provenance. Die markers confirm attribution: heavy north-south die scratches appear in the field left of Jefferson's forehead. The reverse carries a die scratch in the upper left arch, another in the right arch, and a third below the second O of MONTICELLO. Felix Schlag's architectural rendering of Monticello provides the detailed lettering and structural elements against which Class VI distension becomes visible under magnification.
