Description

Eighth doubled die reverse for the 1960 Denver Jefferson Nickel, DDR-008 shows medium spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with doubling increasing in strength from left to right across both inscriptions. This progressive intensification is characteristic of rotational hub doubling, where angular misalignment produces greater displacement at positions farther from the rotation axis. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-1036 and DMR-010, the variety is documented in two die states. Stage A shows a die scratch west from the upper R of AMERICA with both obverse and reverse in early-to-mid die state. Stage B records both reverse and obverse at mid-die state. The die scratch near the R of AMERICA in Stage A provides a useful early-state diagnostic, while its persistence or fading in Stage B helps collectors determine which production window their specimen represents. Struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, the 1960-D was produced at Denver during Felix Schlag's long tenure as the Jefferson Nickel designer. Eight documented DDRs for this date reflects substantial die variety research on early 1960s nickels.
