1960-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under codes UVC-1034 and DMR-008, this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-006 documents a doubled die reverse with medium spread and extra thickness visible on UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, and the right building edge — with the spread increasing from left to right across the affected elements. The left-to-right gradient in spread intensity is a useful attribution shortcut: collectors examining the right end of AMERICA or the right building edge will see the most pronounced extra thickness, making those the highest-yield starting points. The variety progresses through three documented die stages. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed. Stage B (MDS) develops east-to-west die scratches on both the obverse and reverse, providing a die-marker-based secondary confirmation at this stage. Stage C (LDS) brings two notable features: the reverse enters its own LDS substage, and a die break bar develops above the E of LIBERTY — a raised linear break in the die steel that is bold enough to serve as a quick screener for Stage C attribution. The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel was produced in the standard cupro-nickel composition at the Denver Mint, and DDR-006's progressive die staging rewards collectors who track varieties across their full die-life arc.
