Documented by VarietyVista, the 1960-D DDR-004 Jefferson Nickel displays medium spread and extra thickness on three major reverse design areas: E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the right building edge of Monticello — an extensive spread that affects inscriptions on both sides of the reverse and extends to the architectural detail of Felix Schlag's reverse design. Die markers UVC-1032 / DMR-006 track three progressive die states: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die gouge developing over the second U of PLURIBUS at MDS while the obverse is also at MDS; and Stage C where the reverse reaches LDS and a die break bar forms above the E of LIBERTY on the obverse, also at LDS. The die break bar above the E of LIBERTY in Stage C represents a significant structural failure in the obverse die, where a horizontal section of die metal above the letter fractured and produced a raised bar connecting the letter to the rim area — a feature that transforms the E into a distinctive anchor point for authentication. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in 1960, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The 1960-D had a substantial mintage, making variety examples statistically possible despite being individually scarce relative to the total production. The progression from clean fields at Stage A through the PLURIBUS die gouge at Stage B to the LIBERTY die break bar at Stage C provides collectors with a three-point framework for sequencing their specimens within this die's production run, with earlier stages commanding greater interest due to cleaner die surface conditions surrounding the hub doubling features.
