1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005
Error
Description
The 1958-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-005 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-592 and DMR-008. The mintmark displacement is D/D Rotated CCW — the initial D punch was applied at an angle rotated counterclockwise relative to the accepted final position, leaving the misaligned secondary visible alongside the upright primary mintmark. Stage B die markers include a strong die clash from the N of CENT visible at Lincoln's throat, and a strong die clash between the N of CENT and the E of ONE on the reverse — indicating that this die experienced at least one significant clash event during its service. The 1958-D Lincoln Wheat Cent holds a particular historical importance as one of the final-year issues of the Wheat Cent design, which ended production after 1958 when the Lincoln Memorial reverse was introduced for 1959 to mark the sesquicentennial of Lincoln's birth. The bronze composition Wheat Cent ran from 1909 through 1958, and the 1958-D is among the most widely collected final-year coins in the series. The counterclockwise rotation of the primary repunch on RPM-005 requires examination of the mintmark letter geometry rather than simple north-south displacement.
