Description

A proof-only variety, VDDO-006 on the 1956 Jefferson Nickel features medium spread on the lower portions of LI in LIBERTY. The VDDO (Variety Dies Doubled Obverse) classification reflects an alternative cataloging framework for doubled die obverses. Pending UVC and DMR codes indicate this variety is still being fully integrated into the comprehensive census. Stage A documentation shows an unusual pairing: the obverse is in early die state while the reverse appears at mid-die state — a discrepancy suggesting the obverse die was newer when paired with an already-established reverse die, or that the two dies wore at different rates due to differences in their respective design depths. The 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at Philadelphia, the exclusive proof production facility until the transition to San Francisco in 1968. Proof surfaces — with their deeply mirrored fields and frosted design elements — enhance the visibility of even moderate doubling on LI, as the displaced letters reflect light at angles distinct from the surrounding mirror-finish field.
