1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-024

Description

Attributed by Dr. Jim Chaney and cross-referenced as CONECA 7-R-II (Wexler Variety ID: 1956 WDDR-024), this 1956 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel is a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety with a spread pattern across multiple elements of Schlag's Monticello reverse. A spread toward the center is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Very close tripling appears on the lower portion of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Doubling is documented on the right side of the building facade, on the second O of MONTICELLO, and very close doubling appears on FIVE CENTS and the M of MONTICELLO. Class II distorted hub doubling arises when the hub rotates or shifts between impressions, creating spread, notching, or extra thickness depending on the geometry of the misalignment. Dr. Chaney's attribution and the CONECA 7-R-II cross-reference establish recognition in two independent systems. Reverse die markers are well documented: a short die scratch runs southwest from the center of the P in PLURIBUS; a die gouge (dot) sits to the right of the bottom of the small right window; and a die scratch runs from the lower first T in STATES southwest to the rim. No obverse markers are noted.
