1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Frank Baumann attributed WDDR-012, a particularly nice Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety on the 1956 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel where spread appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with closer doubling visible on FIVE CENTS. The multi-zone spread across three distinct reverse text areas provides collectors with multiple diagnostic regions for confirmation, and the closer doubling on FIVE CENTS compared to the wider spread on the peripheral legends is consistent with the variable displacement characteristic of Class II distortion. Obverse die markers include a strong die scratch on the front of Jefferson's collar — a prominent secondary diagnostic visible at low magnification. Reverse markers show a heavy slanted die gouge from the right side of the left arch on Monticello. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1956 WDDR-012, this variety occupies a position among the earlier-numbered DDRs for the 1956 date, suggesting it carries more prominent or more easily identified doubling than many of the higher-numbered entries.
