Description

Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on this 1956 Jefferson Nickel produces close doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, AMERICA, and CENTS. Class II doubling results from distortion in the hub itself rather than misalignment during hubbing, creating a consistent spread pattern across affected design elements. Both sides carry distinctive die markers: on the obverse, a slanted die scratch extends from the tip of Jefferson's nose, while the reverse offers multiple diagnostics including a slanted die gouge below the P of PLURIBUS, two die scratches extending from the left side of Monticello's dome, and a die gouge southwest from the horizontal crossbar of the second A in AMERICA. The wealth of die markers makes attribution straightforward for collectors who locate a candidate coin.
