1955 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1955 1¢ Pr WDDR-010, this proof Lincoln Wheat Cent from Philadelphia exhibits doubled die reverse characteristics with spread toward center on the upper left wheat ear, E PLURIBUS UNUM, both dots, and the entire right wheat ear and stem. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge below the E in LIBERTY and a strong die gouge on the coat two-thirds of the way to the back of the bust. The reverse carries a die scratch near the rim left of the O in OF and a die gouge below the upper left of the T in CENT. Proof-only doubled die varieties are noteworthy because they were struck exclusively for collectors, and the proof process often produces sharper doubling details than business strikes. The 1955 proof Lincoln Cent is forever associated with the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, but reverse varieties like WDDR-010 show that hub doubling affected proof dies as well. The spread toward center across multiple reverse elements provides several diagnostic areas for attribution.
