Description

Among the proof-only doubled die reverses cataloged for the 1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDR-009 presents medium spread on the lower wheat stems and OF AMERICA, accompanied by light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the upper wheat tips. Documented by VarietyVista as UVC-2651 and DMR-022, the die state record identifies Stage A with a die gouge on the rim at the K-9:30 position in Early Die State, plus numerous fine die scratches in the lower vest visible in Late Die State. Stage B at Mid Die State and Stage C at Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The parent coin is the 1955 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent, struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint for inclusion in proof sets — one of the final proof issues before the Mint suspended proof production in 1965. Proof coins are struck from specially polished dies on burnished planchets using multiple strikes at reduced speed, producing sharp detail that makes doubled die features particularly visible and diagnostic.
