Description

Westward repunching on this 1954-D Franklin Half Dollar RPM-001 shows the familiar pattern of a D over D corrected to the left — the initial impression sits displaced to the east of the final D, where the die maker shifted the punch westward after assessing the first application's position. As the primary RPM for the 1954-D, this variety continues the westward correction tendency observed on several other Denver Franklin Half Dollar dates (1949-D, 1952-D RPM-001), suggesting a consistent directional bias in how Denver-bound dies received their mintmarks at the Philadelphia die shop. The 1954-D Franklin Half Dollar was the series' seventh Denver issue, and its RPM adds to the growing catalog of mintmark placement varieties that document the craftsmanship — and occasional imprecision — of hand-punched mintmark application. Each westward RPM across different dates shares the same general displacement direction but differs in magnitude, angle, and the specific overlap characteristics created by each unique die's punch application. Sinnock's Liberty Bell reverse was becoming well-established by 1954. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm.
