1954 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001 / RPM-001

Description

The 1954-S RPM-001, which Wexler numbers WRPM-001, is a repunched mintmark on the Roosevelt dime with the S entered three times. Both catalogs describe it as S/S/S Northwest and South, with secondary images northwest and south of the primary, and both cite it as FS-501 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes FS-10-1954S-501). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties lists obverse markers of an old die dent on the rim at 3 o'clock with two gouges east and south of it, scratches running NW from the chin and lower lip, scratches running SW from the brow, and a short scratch running north from the forehead. On the reverse N/S scratches cross the lower olive and the L of PLURIBUS, scratches rise north off the upper olive leaves, strong N/S scratches lie right of the flame, N/S scratches run along the lower right of the torch, and a gouge sits under the mintmark. John Bordner submitted the die, with upgraded photos taken from a coin Eric Axtell submitted. CONECA lists it as RPM #1. Wexler notes that Bordner's notes mention two die stages that were never photographed or described and for which no records survive; the current stage of the same die stands in for them, and further stages will be added if found. VarietyVista does not name a reporter. Under its marker codes UVC-262 and DMR-002 it gives five stages. Stage A, an early die state, is unconfirmed. At stage B both sides are in a middle die state, with E-W scratches on the reverse. At stage C, a late-middle die state, N-S scratches appear on both sides. At stage D, a late die state, a small chip lies south of the mintmark and the obverse scratches are weak. At stage E, a very late die state, the southern secondary mintmark is missing, a clash runs through the lower left berry, and the obverse scratches are gone.
